About the Authors
Khoo Ee Ming
Dr Khoo is Professor of Family Medicine and Head of department at the Department of Primary Care Medicine, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. She graduated from St. George's Hospital Medical School in London, and did her vocational training and postgraduate degree in general practice in the UK. On her return to Malaysia in 1993, Dr Khoo started her academic career in general practice at the Department of Primary Care Medicine where she is currently working. She is actively engaged in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the University of Malaya and also the postgraduate development of the Master in Family Medicine Programme at university and national level. Dr Khoo was the overall coordinator for the Master of Family Medicine Programme at the University of Malaya. She is a committee member of the National Conjoint Board for the Master of Family Medicine. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia. She was a WHO Fellow at the University of Sydney, Australia in 2002. She is the chair of the Academic committee for courses and a member of EXCO at the Academy of Family Physician, Malaysia. She is the chair of the Malaysian Primary Care Research Group. She had been the Department Quality Manager at the University of Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia. She is an editorial board member of the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health and the Malaysian Family Physician. She was the past chief editor of the Family Physician of Malaysia. She has been a reviewer for scientific journals as well as international scientific conferences. She is actively involved in primary care research, clinical trials, and has research linkages with institutions in the UK and Malaysia. She has published books and papers at international and national journals.
Teng Cheong Lieng
Dr Teng obtained his MBBS from University of Malaya in 1987. Thereafter he worked briefly in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and then in Sarawak for two years. When master programme in family medicine started at the University of Malaya in 1989, he was among the first few trainees. After completing his family medicine training in 1995 and obtaining simultaneously the MAFP/FRACGP, he joined the academia at his alma mater but left to join International Medical University in 1999. Through his interest in evidence-based medicine and primary care research, he became acutely aware of the lack of research output in family medicine and the difficulty to track down many of these research works. This has led to the formation of Malaysian Primary Care Research Group that he chaired from 2004-2006 which aimed primarily to encourage colloborative research between primary care doctors in public sector, private general practices and the academia. He is currently the Chief Editor of Malaysian Family Physician, the journal for the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia.
Ng Chirk Jenn
Dr Ng is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Primary Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya and he practices as a family physician at the University of Malaya Medical Centre. He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1992 and obtained his Masters of Medicine (Family Medicine) in 1998.
He teaches Family Medicine to both medical students and postgraduate doctors. He has also developed his research interests in men’s health, evidence-based practice and qualitative research. He conducts regular research workshops and is an active member of the Malaysian Primary Care Research Group. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD at the University of Sheffield, UK.
Safurah Jaafar
Dr Safurah is the Director of the Family Health Development Division, Ministry Of Health, Malaysia. She was involved in Primary Health Care work from 1983 as medical officer of health in the health clinic of Bukit Tunggal. Since then, she had pursued Master in Public Health from the University of Singapore in 1985. During her seven year service as Maternal and Child Health Officer, she received a fellowship on Child Health Development from the Institute of Child Health, London in 1992. To further her studies to improve in the management of Family Health Resources, she pursued Master of Business Administration from the North-Eastern University Boston. With both Public Health and Business Administration background, she has developed the Primary Health Care section since its inception in 1996, looking at Primary Health Care Development. The work has progressed from looking at quality to comprehensiveness of care both to the general population and those who have been socially marginalised. This includes all the components from health delivery content and scope, human resource and capacity, infrastructure and technology as well as the financial implications both for the public and private. She has also led the pioneering Teleprimarycare project, an ICT project that facilitates seamless and borderless care connecting 47 health clinics to 2 hospitals. She has conducted research in public health and primary care. She is author to several publications and is a reviewer to the Journal of Public Health Medicine. She is an adjunct lecturer to University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and an examiner to UKM and University of Malaya candidates for Master of Public Health.
